First Walk/ Escape!

So it’s been over a week and I think we have gone through the hardest part for us! Emotionally definately! Taras wound has healed up nicely! She has stitches that will need to be removed at the end of the week.   We have been giving her antibiotics and tramadol, also adding other supplements with her food.  Mainly stuff to assist her with eliminating poo! So psylim husk and olive oil.  She appears to be a tad over sedated so we will be reducing her tramadol.  The main thing for us was to insure that she was/is pain free!

She went on her first walk today with Adam (hubby).  They went for a short one, but it was a good one for Tara! Yesterday all three dogs broke out of the yard!! Adam was driving past and saw all three of them sitting under a tree! My bet is that Tara instigated the break out!! She is top dog after all!!

The BIG Decision

We have wooden floors, and when they are clean (which is rarely:P) they become quite slippery for the dogs.  Tara had a little slip when she was excitingly running to see who was at the door.  Sinc then..Tara had a limp, her left leg looked like she had pulled a muscle.  So we treated her like she had pulled a muscle.  Rest, anti inflammatories and pain relief. But the limp just won’t go away! So we took her to the vet.  The vet said that all the symptoms meant that it’s highly possible that she has a bone tumour. The sudden onset of becoming lame (limp), that pain relief was doing nothing for her,  that she is an older dog, and her breed were all against her 🙁 So they took a xray to have a look.  Sure enough, there it was what she had suspected – osteosarcoma. We could see it on the xray, a little bump up the top end of her humorous. 2 options – euthanasia or amputation ! The vet gave us the most up to date information about amputation and chemotherapy and sent us home to have a talk and a think. They said they would support us on our decision.

I guess the decision we made is pretty obvious, because I’ve signed up on here 🙂

INTRODUCING…. Tara!!!

Let me first introduce you to the gorgeous Tara! We found Tara on Rotweiler and Pound Hound Rescue http://www.raph.org.au/ She was at Wagga Wagga pound, which is about 3.5 hr drive from Canberra.  We were after a female dog to keep our boy Kody aka Koojo (11 year old Rottweiler)company. His previous female friend (Angel) had passed on about 6 months prior.  So we decided to put our names down on Tara and rely on the feedback we got from the people at the pound.  They said she was a sweetie.  So we made the journey to Wagga to pick her up and bring her back to Canberra.  Tara was quite slim and it looked like her nipples had fed a handful of litters.  We drove her home and she hit it off with Kody and our cat (Chiquita).  Not to mention our neighbours (Brian and Mona) and ofcourse myself and my husband.
